The pen is mighty

Western Suburbs Weekly - - Western Opinion -

THE pen is a powerful instrument. It can write love letters, or lyrics to beautiful songs.

The words of a pen can bring peace and harmony to its readers. Words of sympathy, good wishes, joy. It gives us humour by letting us laugh at ourselves in a lighthearted way.

Yet the pen can cut like a knife, deep in someone's heart. It can insult, ridicule and be offensive.

In these torrid times, maybe we should exert a little more respect, courtesy and tolerance to other cultures and religions, even if some are radical, as we would like to have towards ourselves.

The mighty pen can placate volatile situations. It can try to make the unreasonable understand that in this world we are all different and need to be able to accept each other. Ridicule and offence only adds fuel to the fire of hate.
