Com­mu­nity lead­ers hon­oured in awards

NED­LANDS res­i­dent Tr­ish Hew­son was awarded the Pre­mier’s Australia Day Ac­tive Cit­i­zen­ship Award at the John Leckie Pav­il­ion on Jan­uary 22. Since co-found­ing the Friends of Hol­ly­wood Re­serve con­ser­va­tion group in 1996, Ms Hew­son has re­cruited vol­un­teers for bush­land restora­tion ac­tiv­i­ties, co-or­di­nated public tours and com­pleted sur­veys of flora and fauna. Uni­ver­sity of WA stu­dent Thea­d­osia Kur­ni­awan won the Pre­mier’s Youth Cit­i­zen­ship Award for her work on the Ned­lands Youth Ad­vi­sory Coun­cil and help­ing to or­gan­ise youth events, in­clud­ing the 2013 Emerge Youth Awards and 2014 4Sure Mu­sic and Skate Fes­ti­val. UWA Ned­lands Foot­ball Club’s Joeysoc­cer Pro­gram won the Ac­tive Cit­i­zen­ship com­mu­nity group award. The pro­gram ex­panded from less than 100 to 930 mem­bers in five years, at­tract­ing chil­dren from 22 schools to play at Col­lege Park on Satur­day af­ter­noons.
