Cast to coast

LES Miserables ensemble cast member Ben Hall is balancing his role in the show with training for the Rottnest Channel Swim.

Raised in Perth and now based in Sydney, Ben said performing in the show complemented his training for the swim.

“Singing is good for the lungs,” he said.

“I’ve been preparing for the swim for about four or five months; it’s the first time I’ve done it.

“I wanted to try it because it creeps me out. I’m not an open water swimmer, but it’s good to face your fears and to have other challenges outside the show.”

The Rottnest Channel Swim on February 21 is a 19.7 km swim from Cottesloe Beach to Rottnest Island and can be competed solo or as part of a duo or team.

Ben said while he was a keen swimmer in years 11 and 12 at school, he preferred performing to swimming and graduated from the WA Academy of Performing Arts in 2012.

“I loved performing more than I loved swimming,” he said.

“My time at WAAPA was invaluable; you are more likely to get a job. “The cast has 16 WAAPA graduates.” Ben said he was nervous about rough weather and sharks but would put his concerns to the back of his mind during the event.

“I’m not too worried about the distance because we are doing it in a team,” he said.

“The only way I would not do it at this point is if LesMis pulled me out because a virus wiped out some of the cast.”

Ben said he expected some LesMiserables cast members to cheer him on from Cottesloe beach during the swim.
