Towntalk FROM THE MAYOR’S DESK
As the battle of the local government borders continues, I am proud to say we continue to focus on the task at hand, and getting things done. One of the Town’s key goals, as detailed in our strategic plan, is economic prosperity, creating an environment where our businesses are thriving and integrated into the life of the Claremont community. Working with the business community, we have created Claremont Now – a cooperative project positioning Claremont as ‘the premier place to shop, dine and be entertained’. Based on consultation and research, a number of initiatives to support the town centre have been developed and implemented. The revitalisation of Bay View Terrace for one, has improved the aesthetic appeal and created a more inviting public space, providing the backdrop for some fantastic pop up events and activities. Upcoming events include Theatre Lane Live, a pop wine bar and in April the town centre will be transformed with street and community artworks. Further improvements are underway; works will soon commence to redevelop Avion Way, Claremont’s high end fashion strip. The strip will be transformed to increase and improve alfresco dining areas and enhance pedestrian amenity to the area. We are very proud of our achievements to date, the Town and the Claremont Now group will continue to work in partnership with the community and local businesses to further enhance the experience of a visit to Claremont. While most of us are still tucked up in bed, Ian Graham, proudly the Town’s longest serving staff member, rises extra early, seven days a week to keep our town centre clean and tidy. Despite Ian’s eager contribution, he still needs help; most mornings, he is assisted by a street-sweeper and a mini army of workers that sweep, steam clean, wipe & blow- clean the street ready for a new day. The council’s cleaning & sweeping programs also provide regular cleaning of the Town’s minor shopping centres and conduct monthly sweeping of all residential streets.
