Motion for council to buy hall on hold

Western Suburbs Weekly - - Western Opinion - By ROSANNA CANDLER

THERE is future scope for the City of Subiaco to purchase the 107-year-old Subiaco Scout Hall on Rokeby Road, says Mayor Heather Henderson.

Councillor Scott Arbuckle presented an elected member’s motion at a council meeting last month to purchase the “significant heritage asset” for about $1.5 million to be adapted into a community hall.

But Mrs Henderson said councillors voted to move on to the next item of business, as more information from staff was required.

“This is not dead in the water, it will probably come back sometime soon as an elected member’s motion,” she said.

Cr Arbuckle said the Scout Association of WA opposed the City raising the heritage significance of the building in October 2014 as it may have affected the value of the property.

He said the 1st Subiaco Scout Group was looking to sell the Scout Hall once they located an alternative site.

“Should the building not pass into public ownership, there is a risk that it will be lost to the community as it will be sold for redevelopment,” Cr Arbuckle said.
