A beautiful noise
BEING able to combine his love of surf, summer and music has made touring at this time of year “a bit of a tradition” for Mat McHugh.
For the past month, McHugh and The Beautiful Girls collective have been visiting beachside towns on the east coast with their Summer Sound System tour.
“It’s not hard work touring in summer really, so it’s been pretty fun,” McHugh said.
“I feel like the music and the show and everything is getting closer to how I hear it in my head.
“It’s taken a long time and I’ve been actively pursuing it with 100 per cent of my energy for over 10 years and it’s really starting to get good now – it’s a good feeling.”
The tour backs up the October release of The Beautiful Girls’ fifth album DancehallDays, which debuted in the ARIA top 30 and was recorded with a PledgeMusic campaign.
“I thought ‘ everyone’s been so supportive, let’s see if they want to jump on and help out and get this made and they really did in rapid fire,” McHugh said.
“It just happened really quickly and we went over the target and I was able to find a space and put the album together.”
The Beautiful Girls will bring their Aussie reggae/roots sounds to Fly By Night in Fremantle.
“Where you play has a lot to do with how the evening eventuates. We want people to have a great time so we search out places that are going to accentuate the vibe we like to bring,” he said.
