THE deaths of at least six quokkas on Rot­tnest Is­land is be­ing in­ves­ti­gated by po­lice and the Depart­ment of Parks and Wildlife. Bod­ies of the small mar­su­pi­als were found in plas­tic plant pro­tec­tors at camp grounds on the is­land about 8pm on Mon­day. A po­lice spokesman said it was be­lieved the quokkas were put in the pro­tec­tors in the past week when the camp was fully booked. Quokkas are pro­tected un­der the Wildlife Con­ser­va­tion Act 1950 and harm­ing them at­tracts a fine of up to $10,000. Call Crime Stop­pers on 1800 333 000 with in­for­ma­tion.
