Hope for some action
FOR some time, organic food activists have pressed for the introduction of meaningful food labelling.
Food Standards of Australia and New Zealand (FSANZ) is happy to allow genetically modified food if the product is processed. Therefore, the soy, sugar or canola in such products may be GM – but we wouldn’t know.
Dairy products or meat may come from animals fed on GM feed - but we wouldn’t know.
Now we have the development where FSANZ has issued a recall notice for some brands of imported frozen berries linked to outbreaks of Hepatitis A. It is of concern that this situation had to occur before the Government would take the issue of food labelling more seriously.
I hope the Government will now implement changes to protect and inform the Australian consumer. J.Pommerin,
