Young duo mix it with the best, smash 10-year mark
SWIM partners Alyssa George from St Hilda’s Anglican School for Girls and Isaac Pollard, both 14, completed the Rottnest Channel Swim on their first attempt last weekend, winning their age category against others much older and placing eighth overall out of 149 duos.
The pair swam an impressive time of 5 hours and 19 mins, breaking a 10year record for the youngest mixed duos by nearly half an hour.
They both swim with the Bay View Saints in Mosman Park and have competed at national level meets but this has been their biggest challenge so far, said Alyssa’s mum Arianne George.
“They have a rigorous training schedule in the pool with up to eight ses- sions a week,” she said.
“Both competed in the Rottnest Swim Through (1.6km) in December, where Isaac won his age division. He is a national medallist for his age group for breast stroke.
“Alyssa prepared for this challenge by competing in a number of openwater events over the last few months including the BHP Billiton Super Series on the Swan River (2.5km) where she came second in the 17 and under age group.
“She also competed in the 3.6km Busselton Jetty Swim a few weeks ago. Both found the Rottnest Swim difficult given the conditions. However they were determined to finish and would not have achieved this without the support they gave each other along the way.”
Isaac Pollard and Alyssa George won their age category in the duos.
