Dinosaurs

MELBOURNE creature designer Sonny Tilders revolutionised the theatre world in 2007 when his team took simple dinosaur animatronics out of the museum and onto the Walking with Dinosaurs arena floor with mobile, autonomous dinosaurs roaming the space.

“We had some choices to make over what dinosaurs to represent and steered it down the path of what I thought were the right size and scale and achievability and we built it up from there,” Tilders said from Global Creatures workshop in West Melbourne.

“We started in 2006 and in that year had to find a workshop, get a team together, design the creatures and rehearse.

“So from first concept to opening night it was less than a year, which was ridiculous and I still don’t know how we did it.”

Since then the company has designed large-scale creatures for another live show, HowtoTrainYour Dragon, mascots for the Winter Olympic Games and even a giant talking Statue of Liberty for New York’s Radio City Music Hall.
