Singer’s voice is her Bond

Western Suburbs Weekly - - Music - By TANYA MACNAUGHTON

KATE Ceberano is a huge Shirley Bassey fan, so it is little surprise she jumped at the chance to sing alongside Michael Falzon and WASO in TheMusicofJames Bond.

“I love Shirley’s endurance, her commitment to herself and the sound of her voice,” Ceberano said.

“I love that she’s not imitative of anyone and she’s a solid character in my scale of female artists.

“And she has completely and utterly been sucking on the fountain of youth.”

Ceberano said she longed for “a rabble-rousing crowd” during the performances, as audience members celebrated their favourite Bond songs with WASO.

“I’m going to use every ounce of my core to sing that note at the top of Goldfinger,” she said enthusiastically.

“Whatever emotion elicits from them, I beg the audience to be vocal about that.”

Ceberano said there was an expectation of entertainment when watching a James Bond film, which always started with the song.

When asked who her favourite Bond actor was, the singer said she loved Roger Moore, Daniel Craig was doing a great job but Sean Connery really owned it.

“And I’m so thrilled that my favourite actress in the whole wide universe, Monica Bellucci, is going to be the next Bond woman,” she said.

“She’s the first that’s actually going to be the same age, if not a few years older than Daniel Craig.”

Ceberano will be joined by musical theatre performer Falzon ( RockofAges, We Will Rock You) who credits the production of JesusChristSuperstar, which Ceberano had a part in, as the reason he got into the industry.

“It was Superstar that got me started on my career too,” Ceberano said.

“I saw the Robert Stigwood film and there was an artist Yvonne Elliman who played Mary and she was from Hawaii.

“I’ve got to say that I’d been struggling as a coloured singer to get a gig in musical theatre because I’m not quite black enough and not quite white enough.

“When I saw Elliman, I decided I wanted to be her one day and then standing on that stage so many years later made an impression on Michael, which was great.”

Kate Ceberano is inspired by the example of the legendary Shirley Bassey.
