VIOLINIST Jon Rose has returned to Perth for a Tura New Music 10-day artist in residency, featuring a series of sonic disturbances with Big Ball Outdoors.

Big Ball Outdoors sees a huge white ball pushed, heaved, thrown and rolled around in the crowd, with the motion manipulating its output of sound.

“The technology is complex and has been developed in collaboration with the STEIM Centre in Amsterdam,” Rose said.

“The ball is impressive in itself and is laced with all sorts of data harvesters such as accelerometers, GPS units and anemometers, but it is the amazing sound world that is created through all these random variables that is so rich and unique.”

Big Ball Outdoors is a free event at Perth Cultural Centre and will be near the State Library of WA pond at 12.30pm, Wednesday, March 25 and on the WA Museum rear lawn at 7pm, Friday, March 27.
