First cat-only hospital in Perth to open later this year

Western Suburbs Weekly - - Quick News -

PERTH’S first cat hospital will open later this year amid growing anticipation from cat lovers and cat welfare organisations.

Shenton Park Cat Haven chief executive Roz Robinson said the hospital would fill a need for a cat-only vet in Perth.

“It’s fantastic to have a catonly clinic; I’m glad to see someone is doing it,” Ms Robinson said.

“Down the track we hope we can work with them.

“It’s something that is needed because people tend to know more about dogs than cats and so cat health can be neglected at times.”

The Town of Cambridge approved the change of use from consulting rooms to veterinary hospital for the hospital site in West Leederville earlier this year.

Hospital owner and vet Martine van Boeijen said Perth was lagging behind other Australian cities that already had one or more cat-only hospitals.

Dr van Boeijen is a member of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists in Feline Medicine and director of the Australasian Society of Feline Medicine.

“It’s well-known that cats get stressed going to the vet if they smell dogs or hear barking,” Dr van Boeijen said. “The vets at the hospital won’t be trying to look at all animals; they will just be focused on cats and can provide a higher understanding.

“Treating cats is like solving a puzzle: they don’t tell you what is wrong with them in the same way that dogs do.”

Within its first week, the Perth Cat Hospital Facebook page had received 1000 likes.

Dr van Boeijen said the central location of West Leederville would ensure the hospital could provide services to most of Perth.

“Cats as a whole suffer from lower health care because it can be more difficult for their owners to take them to the vet,” she said.

“But responsible cat ownership is increasing.

“The hospital will fill a desperate need.”
