The City says ‘Yuk’ to Cigarette Butts.
Cigarette butts are the number one littered item in Australia. They contain over 4,000 chemicals and are not biodegradable. While many smokers aim to do the right thing, cigarette butts continue to congregate in drains, footpaths and garden beds. The City of Perth is running a fourweek cigarette butt littering campaign from April 14. The ‘Yuk’ campaign aims to conjure a sense of disgust in a creative way to illustrate the significance of the problem and shift thinking about cigarette butt litter. As part of the campaign a large ‘Yuk’ perspex lettered sign will be filled with cigarette butts and placed on the corner of William Street and The Esplanade. The ‘Yuk’ sign will provide a visual reminder of the environmental damage cigarette butts do throughout the city, country and around the world. The campaign also includes various other marketing strategies to accompany the strong visual presence of the Yuk sign, including digital screen ads, posters and postcards. The Yuk perspex installation and branding is courtesy of the City of Sydney, which has successfully run the campaign on two occasions and been met with great public support.
