Urgent business at centre launch
IT was obvious that Olympic kayaker Alana Nicholls had walked through the doors of the new WA Institute of Sport High Performance Centre only minutes before Premier Colin Barnett .
The athlete thanked Mr Barnett for the new facility before asking WAIS executive director Steve Lawrence where the bathrooms were.
The Premier told invited guests at the launch that when former Sport and Recreation Minister Terry Waldron came to him four years ago with a request for a new specialist centre for WAIS, he told him they did not have the funding.
“We have run out of money but we’ve done it,” Mr Barnett said.
The keen sportsman revealed that he had tried his hand at hockey for the first time in Singapore the previous week and “was not particularly good”.
