VW’s little hottie is back.

With new, more aggressive styling, an armada of assistance and convenience systems and a new performance-tuned 141kW 1.8litre TSI engine, the Polo GTI makes a welcome return to the fold.

Also, for the first time buyers can opt for either a 6-speed manual or 7speed DSG transmission.

In either form, the turbocharged Polo GTI can zip to 100km/h in just 6.7 seconds. But there’s a difference in torque. Because of tuning parameters, the engine matched to a six-speed manual offers 320Nm, while the auto gets 250Nm.

VW says that despite the difference both have the same overall performance, with the DSG offering greater fuel efficiency.

Other bits of interest include foglights with static cornering function, 17-inch alloy wheels with red brake calipers, the latest generation touchscreen audio system with 6.5-inch colour display and a vast safety package.

The manual is from $27,490 and the DSG from $29,990.

Mazda will have the option of a sedan for its 2 model.

The just-released GTI adds spice to the Polo range.
