BayView bump gets over council hump
ANOTHER speed bump has been approved for Bay View Terrace.
At last week’s Town of Claremont meeting, councillors approved the speed bump at the Gugeri Street Bay View Terrace intersection.
While councillors agreed speeding around particular areas of Bay View Terrace was an ongoing issue, Cr Paul Kelly said he was concerned about the rise in the traffic calming devices.
“This is a very difficult intersection to traffic calm. Drivers will just mount the device at unwarranted speeds – they need to be slowed down before they get to Bay View Terrace,” he said.
Deputy Mayor Bruce Haynes agreed, labelling it a waste of money.
“I’d like to point out that there is traffic calming already – there’s a rumble strip and road block,” Cr Haynes said.
“Drivers will not even see a speed hump unless it is mountainous.”
However, Cr Jill Goetze said she hoped it would stop drivers who did not adhere to the 10km/h speed limit.
“There are numerous cars travelling too fast down Bay View Terrace,” she said.
An allocation of $25,000 for the construction of the speed bump will be considered as part of the 2015-16 budget.
