Western Suburbs Weekly - - Western opinion -

THE City of Subiaco has voted to declare Duke Street a conservation area worthy of special planning control to protect its cultural heritage.

Councillor Scott Arbuckle presented a petition to the council signed by 26 Duke Street residents in favour of the scheme area declaration and said the proposal had “almost complete support” from 90 per cent of the street.

“The weight of the numbers speaks to us here; we are simply talking about preserving heritage that is clearly valued by the people in this community,” Cr Arbuckle said.

Cr Lynley Hewett said she was concerned residents would not have a right to appeal,

“They have done a thumping good job of looking after the heritage up until this point,” Cr Hewett said.

However, Cr Julie Matheson said residents could appeal the decision at the State Administrative Tribunal.
