Council ups rate to support town centre

Western Suburbs Weekly - - Western opinion - By EMILY BAKER

A SPECIFIED Area Rate (SAR) for Claremont’s business district will double to boost coffers over the next three years.

Town of Claremont councillors unanimously agreed at last week’s meeting to increase the SAR from $60,000 to $120,000, with $1 collected from every business to be matched by the council to raise about $240,000 for the Claremont Now initiative.

Councillor Jill Goetze said the SRA was needed for the worthwhile initiative to continue.

“It needs time to develop and reach its full potential – we’ve got enthusiastic staff and committee members,” Cr Goetze said.

“The next three years will be vital to its success.”

The SAR was imposed in 2012 to support Claremont Now, a marketing initiative in partnership with businesses to stimulate the local economy and make the town centre a more appealing destination.
