Thunder in arena curtain raiser
BEFORE Team Canada and USA hit the ice this month, the Perth Thunder will showcase the best of the Australian Ice Hockey League as they take on reigning champions the Melbourne Mustangs.
The league-leading Thunder will take to the ice just hours before the North American hockey powerhouses thrill more than 10,000 West Australians on June 20.
Perth Thunder general manager Stan Scott said it was a good opportunity for the club to remind locals there was a competitive league in their back yard.
“It’s excellent for us to have the opportunity to showcase ourselves,” he said.
“We want people to know we have an exceptionally good league here in Australia and for us, we’ve got an exceptionally good team here in Perth.”
Scott said the logistics of organising an event involving two international and AIHL teams proved difficult, but was finalised late last month.
“There were murmurings in February but we kept it under wraps they’re really looking forward to it,” he said.
The Thunder game will start at 3.30pm on June 20.
