JUMPING runs in the family for the Szaleks.

Scotch College Year 12 student Grant Szalek (17) will represent Australia in the Commonwealth Youth Games in Samoa in September.

His dad Bo is also his coach and came third in the South African championships for high jump in the under-19 event. Grant’s 14-yearold brother is also a high jumper.

“We try to keep training separate from home but it can be useful for getting the diet right,” Grant said.

“I broke my first record when I was 13 at little athletics.

“The competition record (at the Youth Commonwealth Games) is 213cm and I want 214cm, so whatever medal that gets me I’ll be happy with.”

Grant said his friends were “ecstatic” when they heard that he had been selected.

“I just want to beat the competition record,” he said. “I’m working on sprints and training hard.”
