Exhibit looks a real pearler
PEARLS have played a unique and important role in Australia’s history, and now that contribution is on show at the Maritime Museum in a new exhibition.
Lustre: Pearling & Australia is a project between the WA Museum and Broome’s Yawuru Aboriginal corporation Nyamba Buru Yawuru, is two years in the making.
WA Museum chief executive Alec Coles said the exhibition was about more than just pearls.
“Lustre also investigates the biology of the pearl oyster and its environment, as well as the devastating impact of cyclones on the industry,” he said.
“It tells the Australian story of the pearl shell and the pearls they produce.
“It also explores the relationships between the people of pearling and the industry that emerged in Australia.
“Lustre is told largely from an Aboriginal perspective.”
