Port’s best from Treasures chest

Western Suburbs Weekly - - Music - By JESSICA NICO

SOME of the biggest names in local music will be bringing action back to Fremantle’s best underused venues in next month’s Hidden Treasures winter music festival.

It does not matter what the weather is like outside, the inside of the Buffalo Club, Navy Club, National Hotel and PS Art Space will be heating up as some of the best local bands and solo artists hit the stage every Thursday night in July.

As well as traditional sets from acts like Custom Royal, Hideous Sun Demon, Methyl Ethyl and Shameem TaheriLee, PS Art Space will be bringing a different kind of music appreciation after assembling five distinct and progressive programs, each looking into different themes like hip-hop, psych-rock and tribal techno.

Also new on the bill for 2015 is the Irish Music Jam Session at the National Hotel.

Held every week during the festival, musician David Hyams said an Irish music session was usually an informal gathering of musicians who came together to play a bit of traditional Irish music.

“At least six players will turn up each night and play around a table in an informal style, and it’s likely there will be others who join in,” he said.

“It’s not really a show so much but about the atmosphere; you’ll mostly hear some lively tunes played by some great musicians and it’s a great way to warm up for the other events the festival will be offering each Thursday.

“I’ve been involved with Hidden Treasures a few times now in different capacities, the festival always has some great ideas and great acts and I love seeing some of the clubs and venues around High Street come alive.”
