Burnett to lead Subiaco
FORMER Goldfields-Boulder chief executive Don Burnett will replace City of Subiaco interim chief executive Ian Hill in early October.
Councillors voted to appoint Mr Burnett as new chief executive at a meeting last week.
Mayor Heather Henderson said Mr Burnett had almost two decades of experience as a chief executive, at the Goldfields-Boulder council and the Town of Northam.
Mrs Henderson said Mr Burnett’s local government expertise would provide “strong and stable leadership” for the next five years.
“His career path and strong understanding of both regional and metropolitan councils place him in a great position to lead Subiaco to a bright future,” she said.
“These are exciting times for Subiaco and I look forward to seeing the City’s administration continue its development path under his leadership.”
Mr Hill said he would continue to work on “refocusing and reimaging” Subiaco ahead of Mr Burnett’s arrival.
“This week, we are holding a forum on alternative approaches to our committee and council meeting arrangements,” he said.
“Council can trial changes before the elections in October, so the timing is perfect.”
Mr Hill said it was important to continue making improvements to the town centre, following recent $100,000 upgrades, including pot plants, parklets and tree fairy lights.
“There was a feeling among the business community that we hadn’t paid enough attention to the signs of a decline in visitation and foot traffic,” he said.
“In my mind, it was looking unloved and uncared for, so we were in a bit of catch-up mode, and in fact still are.”
Mr Hill said the city was also working on bigger projects, such as changing Hay Street to two-way traffic by 2017.
