Students find courage for play
PRESBYTERIAN Ladies’ College theatre arts director Bauke Snyman says the school’s 2015 production is fitting during the Anzac Centenary.
Students from years 8 to 12 will perform Bertolt Brecht’s play Mother Courage and her Children this week.
Mr Snyman said the Anzac Centenary was one of the reasons he chose the play for the school production. “I thought it was fitting during the Anzac Centenary, as one of the strongest statements against war,” he said.
“Also a Bertolt Brecht play is prescribed in the Year 11 Drama syllabus, so it is relevant to many drama students.”
Mother Courage drags her cart across the battlefields, profiteering from a war that destroys her children, one by one.
PLC Arts Captain Lucy Rossen (Year 12), who plays the role of Mother Courage, said it was a strong production to cap off her performing career at PLC.
“It is tough balancing rehearsals with Year 12, but it’s fun and it’s nice to end my time at PLC with a famous play about an important subject,” Lucy said.
Mother Courage and her Children will be staged at PLC’s Hazel Day Drama Theatre on August 13, 14 and 15 at 7pm.
