POLICE this month will focus on road users who fail to wear seatbelts. Research shows that road users who do not use appropriate restraints are 10 times more likely to suffer serious or fatal injuries in a crash. Officers will pay particular attention to seatbelts during Operation Trevandy in August. From January to July 24, failure to wear a seatbelt was a causal or contributing factor in 19 road deaths, while another 22 people suffered life-changing injuries. Anyone who is caught can expect to receive a fine from $550 and four demerit points, to $900 and four demerit points.”
