Students dive into Mars play

Western Suburbs Weekly - - Theatre -

WRITER and director Will O’Mahoney is working on his latest production The Mars Project with WAAPA third-year acting students.

The play is inspired by the not-for-profit Netherlands organisation that plans to colonise Mars by 2025 and will be performed at State Theatre Centre Rehearsal Studio 2 from August 22 to 27.

O’Mahoney began developing the script with students last year and said it focused on a young girl, Wren, who after attending a life-changing seminar decides to go to Mars, whatever it takes.

“Maybe Wren and the other Mars One volunteers are after what a lot of us are looking for – significance, meaning and the desire to be taken seriously,” O’Mahoney said.

“I do think in our world it’s becoming harder to get lost and harder to stand out.

“The Mars One mission offers its applicants hope on both these fronts. The need to be remembered and the need to disappear are maybe more entwined than we like to think.”
