Contest for poets

THE Peter Cowan Writers’ Centre’s annual Glen Phillips’ Poetry Prize competition is now open to poets residing in Australia.

It offers a $100 Judge’s Encouragement Award for Youth, in addition to the major prizes, to encourage new and emerging young poets.

Last year’s judge Dr Marcella Polain said a successful poem could “raise questions and plant intrigues”.

“The best poems, I think, compel us to read them again. But so do the worst,” he said. “A really good poem will surprise us. “It will make all manner of leaps: for example, in diction, structure, enjambment, metaphor, image, subject and idea.”

Entrants may submit poems up to 50 lines in length with an open theme.

Online and postal entries are accepted. Entries close on October 2.
