Perth songstress saves the day

IT helps to know people in high places.

Perth songstress Jess White, who appeared in Grease alongside Rob Mills, answered an SOS from the celebrated singer last Wednesday to join him on stage at a Telethon fundraiser.

Mills was in town to perform at Cabaret for Telethon 2015 but a flight delay meant another expected special guest, former Perth breakfast radio host Em Rusciano, was left grounded in Melbourne.

Minus his duet partner and just hours before the show at Friends Restaurant, Mills dialled up White and asked if she would learn a song to sing with him.

The 24-year-old starlet didn’t disappoint and no one at Friends seemed happier or prouder than Mills himself.

White is a WAPPA graduate and former Subiaco resident who held two understudy roles in the musical.

She told Matilda she was “between roles” at the moment and was walking her King Charles cavalier in Applecross when Mills’ unexpected phone call came through.

Irish songwriter Ciaran Gribbin, who in more recent times has fronted INXS, and a couple of legends of the Australian music scene, Don Spencer and Peter Northcote, rounded out a night of top billing and terrific entertainment.
