SAS and their families deserve the very best

Western Suburbs Weekly - - Westernopinion -

I AM disappointed that the future wellbeing of our SAS personnel and their families has not been the main argument against the Defence Housing Australia development proposal.

The SAS is crème de la crème of the world's fighting forces and Australia should be ensuring that the SAS soldiers and their families have the best support in every way.

We want SAS families to live in a highly desirable location with a good community close to good amenities. The present highly desirable location at Swanbourne ticks all the boxes. Soldiers away on active duty can leave their families confident that they are in the best place being looked after in a close community.

If DHA gets what it wants, our SAS and their families will lose their present peaceful secure community. They will lose their back yards, gardens and have to live more closely together in a less amenable part of the base.

Housing and apartments will then be sold off to the public in the more desirable part of the base. This is a disgrace. WA should be proud to have the elite fighting force based here. Rather than taking away land resources to pay for new army homes, Australia should be buying more land resources in the best locations to enable the SAS to grow and meet the challenge of the next 100 years.

We should be ensuring that everything possible is done to provide safe, secure and pleasant homes for families of our fighting forces.

Selling off sought-after land is easy. Acquiring such land for a growing SAS in the future will be too hard.

I do not want our fighting men and their families to have to make do with second best. They deserve our wholehearted respect, gratitude and support.

The DHA’s approach is not in the interest of our soldiers and I will find it extremely disappointing if the Swanbourne base has to give up any of its present valuable property resource.

Becky Vidler, Mosman Park.
