Netball plans for the future

NETBALL WA has signed off on a first-of-its-kind Netball Strategic Facilities Plan.

Undertaken by WA Department of Sport and Recreation contractors, the plan provides a blueprint for facilities now and in the future as well as participation in netball across the State.

The report includes an overview of where resources are needed in the future.

Netball WA president Deane Pieters said the organisation had a “bold vision” to have more than 2000 participants by 2018.

“I’ve got to say, we are actually well on track to achieving that,” Mr Pieters said.

“This report allows us to build capacity and have a clear understanding of where we need to focus our resources.

“It is essentially the blueprint for not only short to medium term but also certainly our long-term vision, which will be beyond our strategic plan in 2018.”

Mr Pieters said the recommendations from the strategic facilities plan would be incorporated into the organisation’s strategic plan when they reviewed it at the end of next year.

“This is the first report of this kind that has been commissioned,” he said.

“One of our strategic priorities is that all our regions and associations are resourced properly to build capacity.

“Netball is a big sport, we are the leading participation sport and we need to future proof our sport.”

Perth Netball Association president Elaine Clucas said participation numbers continued to grow but the association was limited by infrastructure.

“We know at PNA that our competition could grow immensely if we had more facilities and more infrastructure,” Ms Clucas said.

“But we have a state-of-the-art netball centre, we have the best already whereas other centres in the country and in regional areas don’t have those.

“So its good to make sure everybody across the board has the same capacity to play the best they can and expand.”
