THEFTS from people and their cars at beaches have risen in a five-day spree to October 7. “We’ve had a significant increase of these crimes at beaches and beachside car parks including Mosman Park, Cottesloe, Swanbourne and City Beach,” Senior Sergeant Carol Vernon said. The thefts included credit cards, a purse and car keys taken from the towel of a woman at Cottesloe Beach on October 2, and damage to a Mercedes parked near Floreat beach on October 4.
POLICE suspect there is a connection between a Broome Street burglary that occurred about noon on October 7 and a burglary at a Lyon Street home less than nine hours later. Sgt Vernon said a front door was open when the Broome Street resident went for a 45-minute walk. A wallet, mobile phone and credit cards were taken. Myer store staff alerted police to the theft when the cards were used to fraudulently make purchases of $5000 later that day. At Lyon Street between 5 and 9pm, golf clubs and bicycles worth $4000 were taken when thieves entered through an unlocked garage door.
