1896 home wins best addition title

AUSTRALIA’S best addition of more than $800,000 to a house is to an 1896-built View Street, Peppermint Grove home awarded at the National Building Design Awards in Melbourne on October 17.

“It was a challenge because the existing house is a limestone cottage, but at the back was a 1960s addition,” DRDA principal architect Don Taylor said.

The design developed by Mr Taylor’s Mosman Park-based company retained an original concrete slab from the old addition.

Mr Taylor said this kept the new addition within its budget, and allowed a half-flight of stairs to a new family room and another halfflight up to a new master bedroom in the extension, beyond which is a new garage-granny flat.

The award said the design was “elegant, beautifully detailed and executed”, and allowed a focus on views to the home’s outdoor areas.

Owner Carolyn Shephard is only the third in her home’s 119-year history.

“When we bought it five years ago it required extensive renovations – even lighting was only from the wall power points,” she said.

The extension has brought new family life to her, her husband and three young daughters.

“It fits our family perfectly because we’ve got three small children – 11, 9 and 5 – and we can fit everything in, and every room gets used,” Mrs Shephard said.

The National Building Design of the Year title went to Subiaco d4 Design for its layout for the Northbridge Brewing Company in Lake Street, Northbridge.

Subiaco’s Meyer Shircore and Associates received an award for the best multi-residential design over six dwellings for a development in Loftus Street, West Leederville.
