Thief goes on burglary spree

Western Suburbs Weekly - - News - By JON BASSETT

A THIEF is suspected to have committed three burglaries reported to Cottesloe police in 12 hours on October 21.

Police are investigating if the thief is linked to another 10 crimes in other western suburbs.

“We have been hit by a burglar with these burglaries, in addition to another 10 burglaries in the past five days,” Senior Sergeant Carol Vernon said.

The thief took a petty cash tin and damaged cabinets at the Gemmological Association of WA in Railway Street in Claremont overnight on October 21, and earlier forced open a kitchen window before taking $600 at a Fern Street in Swanbourne house between 8.15am and 3pm. Between 1.15pm and 3.30pm, an unlocked front door allowed a handbag to be taken from the kitchen bench at a Salvado Street in Cottesloe home.

Among the other 10 crimes in suburbs including Peppermint Grove and Floreat, was a burglary at a Bateman Street, Mosman Park home where $100 was taken on October 19.

Those at the home disturbed a man wearing a full balaclava, dark clothing and gloves, before he jumped a wall and escaped.

Sgt Vernon said it was suspected the thief was trying to get into many homes, before finding one that could be robbed.

“To make it harder for him, people need to be automatically locking doors and windows,” Sgt Vernon said.
