Some sound advice for Perth

Western Suburbs Weekly - - Music - Tanya MacNaughton

CAROL Robinson lived everywhere from England to South Dakota during her childhood and considers LA her American home.

But in 1979 her fascination with Paris’s local new music scene lured her to the French capital.

Fate stepped in and she met electronic music composer Eliane Radigue at a dinner party who, after listening to Robinson’s album Feldman, invited the musician to work on the 2007 Naldjorlak project.

“We have a similar comprehension of the interior of sound and we are both perfectionists,” Robinson said.

“Her music is powerful in its extreme subtle perfection; the awareness that it provokes is important in today’s conflicted world.”

Although Robinson dabbled with the piano and viola da gamba, she found her voice in the clarinet and plays various types, including the Lithuanian birbyne, which will feature in her Decibel New Music Ensemble performance on October 30.

Decibel director Cat Hope commissioned Radigue and Robinson to create a new work as an addition to Radigue’s OCCAM OCEAN series.

OCCAM – The Music of Eliane Radigue will be performed at PICA, where Robinson is doing a two-week artist residency.

“Rather than interpreting a score, the work entails extensive one-on-one rehearsal to understand the exact timbral control required,” Robinson said.

“Without the on-site presence of one of us, it would not be possible to create this new piece with Decibel and it seemed natural that I be the person to come to Perth.”

Robinson said she would rehearse individually with each Decibel musician through the various instrumental combinations before bringing the group of five together.

“I’m looking forward to making a beautiful, tailor-made piece for Decibel that reflects the unique nature of WA,” she said.
