NEW Australian works and classic operas feature in WA Opera’s 2016 season program.

Puccini’s comedy Gianni Schicchi will begin the year for the City of Perth’s annual free Opera in the Park at Langley Park on Saturday, February 6.

Tim Winton’s novel The Riders will be brought to life by WA composer Iain Grandage, while the homage to Australia continues in Simon Phillips’ production The Elixir of Love by Donizetti.

The Opera Conference production of The Pearlfishers, directed by Michael Gow and conducted by WA Opera artistic director Brad Cohen, will complete the year.

WA Opera general manager Carolyn Chard said the company was proud to present the 2016 season in a year of firsts including Gianni Schicchi (new to the company’s repertoire), The Riders (a new Australian work), The Elixir of Love (a new to Perth production) and The Pearlfishers (a new production).

“We hope to enrich the cultural landscape of WA and shine a spotlight on Australian talent,” she said.

Subscriptions on sale from October 30 and single tickets from November 11.
