Western Suburbs Weekly - - Western Opinion -

THERE is a certain irony in the timing of the State Government’s push to extend trading hours for general retail stores. The decision that will no doubt benefit big business as much as consumers is set to be debated in State Parliament during the same month set aside to celebrate small businesses. November is Shop Small month, which supposes to generate support towards the array of small businesses that underpin our local suburbs. The rise of online shopping and the spread of international retailers have meant small businesses have never felt the competition more fiercely. Allowing big players to open at 7am most days and to stay open an hour later on Saturdays just adds to the challenges facing the “little guy”. In the end, your hard-earned is yours to spend however and wherever you like. But don’t overlook local small businesses. They have put their faith and money into your area, and I bet they’d appreciate you doing the same.
