Mayor pedal power lights up carnival

Western Suburbs Weekly - - News -

CITY of Vincent Mayor John Carey had a leisurely cycle from his council office to the official launch of the 2015 Light Up Leederville Carnival last week, but was not expecting to use cycle power to officially ‘light up’ this year’s carnival.

After guests enjoyed a 10-course lunch provided by Leederville businesses, Synergy officially opened the carnival by inviting Carey to power light globes with pedal power.

While the stationary bike didn’t provide the comfort of Vincent’s deadly treadly, it did the job of lighting up the 2015 Carnival.

Carey said a recent trip to Barcelona supported his cause for more focus on people-friendly spaces.

“In Barcelona there’s a focus on spaces where people can linger without regulation or red tape,” he said.

The Light Up Leederville Carnival is on this Sunday from noon to 9pm.
