Plaques to honour former mayor, councillors

Western Suburbs Weekly - - News -

FORMER Town of Cambridge Mayor Simon Withers and councillors Alan Langer and Colin Walker will be remembered for their contribution to the Town with three new plaques.

The plaques will acknowledge their efforts with the City Beach Precinct, Bold Park Golf Course and Wembley Golf Course.

At its November 24 meeting, the Council approved Cr Sonia Grinceri’s motion to install the plaques, after debating the appropriateness of the gesture.

“They were very much involved and played a pivotal role and I think it’s very acceptable that we are acknowledging them as such,” she said.

Andres Timmermanis said he was not sure Mr Withers would want his name on the plaques, considering he (Mr Withers) resolved to stay away from council once his term ended.

“I am concerned about the precedent,” he said.

Cr Louis Carr said Mr Withers would not have a problem with it because they discussed the motion recently while playing golf.

“He seemed quite happy about it.”

Mayor Keri Shannon said the refurbishment of Bold Park Pool was more the result of a community protest than Mr Withers’ work.

“When I look at this I’m in two minds,” she said. “I’m just not entirely sure it’s appropriate.”
