Bike lanes to connect

Western Suburbs Weekly - - Western Opinion -

EXISTING bike lanes on Queenslea Drive and Victoria Avenue will soon be joined after Claremont Council approved a 1.5m cycle lane.

Councillors went against the officer’s recommendation to withdraw the connecting lane from the budget and instead approved up to $60,000 for a westbound cycle lane near Christ Church Grammar School at a meeting earlier this month.

Cr Kate Main supported the proposal, saying Claremont was one small part of a larger thoroughfare.

Mayor Jock Barker and Cr Chris Mews voted against the item, with Mr Barker saying he had not seen schoolchildren use the bike lane and could not support it.

Council will decide on the use of remainder of $165,000 initially budgeted for the works at the mid-year review.
