Swags to give home­less cheer

St Vin­nies dis­trib­ute the swags to a range of in­di­vid­u­als ex­pe­ri­enc­ing home­less­ness, in­clud­ing fam­i­lies who are un­able to se­cure emer­gency shel­ter and are forced to sleep on the streets.

So­cial en­ter­prise man­ager Carl Prowse said for ev­ery $95 raised, St Vin­nies could pro­vide a home­less per­son with a wa­ter­proof swag.

“We gen­er­ate 88 per cent of our fund­ing our­selves from non-gov­ern­ment sources, so we rely greatly on the gen­er­ous sup­port from the com­mu­nity,” Mr Prowse said.

“Cur­rently in WA there are around 9600 peo­ple ex­pe­ri­enc­ing home­less­ness and this num­ber has grown by 17 per cent in the last six years, and is con­tin­u­ing to in­crease.

The Agency Property Part­ners chief ex­ec­u­tive Paul Niar­done said gov­ern­ment ser­vices were de­creas­ing for peo­ple in need.
