Winning names for island peacocks

Western Suburbs Weekly - - News -

ROTTNEST Island’s newest resident peacocks have been named Diego and Hunter.

Sophie Griffiths, who lives on the island and attends school there, submitted the winning entry.

The Year 4 student, who is among 11 students on the island, said the school’s peacock Pickles died recently.

Diego and Hunter were released from quarantine onto the island last month.

Rottnest Island Authority terrestrial officer Cassyanna Thomas said there was instant calm when the peacocks’ cages were opened.

She said the peacocks seemed very relaxed and content as they checked each other out and gradually came out of their cages.

“Hunter came out first, followed by Diego,” she said.

“As soon as Diego emerged they both flapped their wings to stretch them out. Hunter jumped on to a branch, while Diego started foraging – both exhibiting natural behaviours.”
