Mature Lleyton is a model for Nick

Western Suburbs Weekly - - WESTERN OPINION - Denise S. Cahill - editor

LLEYTON Hewitt won me over at the Hopman Cup. His tenacious playing style, never- give-up attitude and obvious respectful rapport with his opposition was on display at Perth Arena. The crowds loved him and his post-match interviews were professional and mature. However, this was not always the case. A decade ago, he was named one of the world’s most hated sportsmen. His trademark “c’mon” and hand to the forehead gesture were seen as egotistical. There was no sign of this guy on centre court last week. His parents watched on proudly and he had Australian flags waving furiously at all his matches, even when he lost. It gives me hope for 20-yearold Nick Kyrgios, who at times had Aussie fans cheering for the opposition, until his game against Andy Murray where he showed respect to his opponent and the crowd. The more Kyrgios hangs around Hewitt, the better off Australian tennis fans will be.
