SCARBOROUGH Tennis Academy director Rick Willsmore has been selected to coach the state team at the Super 10s National Final in Melbourne this week.

The 2013 Tennis West Coach of the Year will take 10-year-olds Wayne McNicol (Wembley Downs Tennis Club), James Newton (Reabold Tennis Club), Cian Ingles (Nollamara Tennis Club) and Zach Melanie (Kwinana Tennis Club) to the final, held during the second week of the Australian Open.

Willsmore coached Team Federer during the Tennis Australian competition, but none of his team members made the final cut.

He said the best 16 players were selected from the Super 10s competition and the top four selected for the final.

“It’s a great competition – the kids have on-court coaching and that doesn’t happen anywhere else,” Willsmore said.

“It takes them away from their clubs and puts them with the best players their age.” Tennis Australia will introduce Super 8s next year. Willsmore said he mainly coached junior players at Scarborough because “it’s my passion”.

The WA team will compete against each state and territory in a round-robin competition from January 27 to 31.

“NSW will be hard to beat because population generally dictates level,” Willsmore said.
