Play space on the cards

Western Suburbs Weekly - - News -

A MULTI million-dollar all-abilities play space will be built at Beaton Park Reserve, Dalkeith to encourage people of all ages and abilities to explore the world of play.

The 10,000sqm play space is expected to cost about $4 million, of which $1.5 million has been raised by local businesses and a Lotterywest grant.

Further funding is expected to be generated through an event on May 6 at Beaton Park for sponsorship opportunities.

Community development manager Marion Granich said the underlying idea was to provide a place to play that could be used by everyone, regardless of age or ability.

“Perth still lacks a play facility that works for all ages,” she said.

“That is the cutting-edge difference of this facility that it is purposedesigned to work for all ages.

“Few play facilities work for teenagers or adults, whereas this has been designed with those groups in mind.”

Ms Granich said construction of the state-of-the-art play facility was due to start in December and is expected to be built over four financial years.

“However, this could be quicker if sufficient funds are raised earlier than anticipated,” she said.

“So the pace at which the facility is built depends on how much the people of Perth like the idea and want to support it.”

The play space will be designed by award-winning landscape architect Fiona Robbe, who is also part of an international group developing standards for inclusive playgrounds.

The project is a joint venture with the Rotary Clubs of Nedlands, Subiaco, West Perth and Matilda Bay, Inclusion WA, Lotterywest, Wood and Grieves Engineers and Australia’s Bridge.
