Chance to give back at Bethanie

Western Suburbs Weekly - - Streetwatch -

BETHANIE volunteer of 20 years John Riordan (70) walks four days each week from his Subiaco home to help seniors at the charity’s aged care centre on Charles Street in West Perth.

“I do it for something to do and to give something back to the community,” Mr Riordan said.

His non-paid work is among that of about 600 volunteers at Bethanie’s centres across WA.

The contributions of all volunteers in community groups will be recognised during National Volunteer Week from Monday. Mr Riordan helps the elderly at the West Perth centre with games, activities and day trips.

He was introduced to the charity by his cousin 20 years ago, and initially volunteered at a Bethanie shop on Beaufort Street in Perth.

He went to the centre 15 years ago.

“All you need is patience, understanding and a caring attitude,” he said.

He also does work around the centre, including gardening, cooking, arts and crafts.
