SARAH Tucker is hop­ing her two-pronged ap­proach to im­prov­ing phys­i­cal and men­tal health will work won­ders on her clients.

The Mt Hawthorn res­i­dent this month opened the doors of her new Wem­b­ley stu­dio Nest Yoga, which of­fers yoga and coun­selling to man­age stress, anx­i­ety and pe­ri­ods of ad­just­ment.

A qual­i­fied so­cial worker for 12 years, Mr Tucker said the com­bi­na­tion of yoga and coun­selling was de­signed to build phys­i­cal strength through yoga poses and work on breath­ing tech­niques so stress and anx­i­ety man­age­ment tools could be used in stress­ful sit­u­a­tions.

“For teenagers par­tic­u­larly, they have a lot go­ing on in their lives - there are a lot of ex­pec­ta­tions, it’s a pe­riod of great change for them and they’re not al­ways com­fort­able in their bod­ies,” Ms Tucker said.

“Hope­fully they can build trust, self es­teem, self worth and learn tech­niques to man­age stress­ful sit­u­a­tions they’re com­ing up against. There are so many kids with anx­i­ety and they don’t think they have re­sources to deal with it, so I’m hop­ing to give ado­les­cents strate­gies to man­age every­day anx­i­ety and build re­silience.”

Ms Tucker said there were dif­fer­ent strate­gies for child, adult and teenaged yoga classes, which in­cluded in­cor­po­rat­ing games and con­fi­dence build­ing strate­gies.

“With a lot of things, you get out what you put in.

“So when peo­ple want to see changes in their lives, they need to come and put work in but that can be guided and en­cour­aged,” Ms Tucker said.

“Peo­ple of­ten worry be­cause they don’t know what to ex­pect, so some­times it’s about try­ing some­thing that’s a lit­tle bit dif­fer­ent.

“Some­times you’ve tried things which haven’t worked and not ev­ery ap­proach is a fit for ev­ery per­son ei­ther so you have to find some­thing that works with the in­di­vid­ual.

“With the link be­tween phys­i­cal and men­tal health, some­one who feels bal­anced is gen­er­ally go­ing to have a bet­ter self es­teem and phys­i­cal health is greatly linked with men­tal health.”
