CLAREMONT hairdresser Michael O’Dowd (35) has won WA and Northern Territory Hairdresser of the Year at the Australian Hair Fashion Awards for the second consecutive year.

“Like every career, you need to progress and constantly keep yourself interested, and having my own salon has allowed me to expand,” Mr O’Dowd said.

He and his wife Christie opened O’Dowd-Christie Hair in Avion Way in 2012. It was 16 years since Mr O’Dowd started hairdressing at a friend’s salon “to help pay the rent”.

His second Australian Hair Fashion award was presented in Sydney on April 10, after Mr O’Dowd sent a photographic collection to judges of his work in the past year.

He also had to show where he thought hair design was going.

“For that I looked at New York Fashion Week, where everything there is going back to the 1970s with lots of fringes,” Mr O’Dowd said.

Claremont’s Michael O’Dowd is a second-time WA and NT Hairdresser of the Year.
