Closing ward ‘bad choice’

THE union that represents enrolled nurses, United Voice, lashed the State Government for its handling of the new Perth Children’s Hospital after it became clear last week there would be further delays.

United Voice secretary Carolyn Smith said the Government had not been able to deliver a hospital project “that hasn’t been plagued with issues from the beginning”.

“Their problem is they try to do things on the cheap and in the quickest timeframe possible in an attempt to get some good press,” Ms Smith said. “Unfortunately for them, it doesn’t work like that.

“The result is the community is left disadvantaged with unsatisfactory hospital care for children.

“To close the infants ward at PMH about 12 months before the anticipated opening date (of the new hospital) is a naive decision on the Government’s behalf. Parents and kids rely on the services from this ward.”
