AFTER nine-year-old Filip Faix’s battle with cancer, a Maylands businessman will help raise funds for Telethon through a second annual Ultimate Ice Hockey Championship.

John Caputo’s business partner Paul Faix’s son spent last year at Princess Margaret Hospital tackling a sarcoma with chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

Parents Paul and Denisa Faix discovered the Maylands Peninsula Primary School student had a lump on his left side below his collarbone and took him for tests in late 2014.

After an MRI, CT scans, ultrasounds and a biopsy, they found Filip had a sarcoma.

While also caring for their three other children, the couple said the staff at PHM were a great support.

“They do the maximum for your child; every little pain they try to help, they entertain them, they try to even make it fun for them… very caring people,” Ms Faix said.

Filip was part of an international clinical study at the hospital to help improve treatment.

“We saw the importance of research,” Mr Faix said.

Filip is now cancerfree.

Mr Faix said he urged parents to check their child’s lumps very quickly, as sarcoma was a very aggressive form of cancer.

“If it wasn’t treated then, the doctor said he probably would have had about 12 months,” he said.

Mr Caputo will reprise the Ultimate Ice Hockey Championship that began last year and raised funds for Teen Challenge, and will this year raise funds for PMH and the Telethon Institute.
